The journey in one line

88 stops in Japan. Complete means all 88 visited.

The Shikoku pilgrimage is a loop of eighty eight temples around the smallest of Japan's four main islands. It is associated with Kukai, the monk also called Kobo Daishi, who was born on Shikoku in 774. Walking the whole circuit is about 1,200 kilometres and takes most people between forty and sixty days. Many more travel it by car or bus, or do it in sections over years. Pilgrims are called henro and are recognisable by a white jacket, a conical hat and a staff that stands for Kukai walking alongside. The phrase for that is dogyo ninin, two travelling as one.

Unlike most pilgrimage routes this one returns to where it started, so there is no arrival and no cathedral at the end. The circle is the shape of the thing. It also runs through ordinary life. The path goes along highways, through supermarket car parks and up mountain tracks. Local people practise settai, giving food or money or a lift to henro, and refusing is not done. The route is a Japanese National Historic Site and the association of the eighty eight temples has sought World Heritage listing.

Spring and autumn are the usual seasons. Summer is hot and typhoons arrive from August. Temple offices, where the stamp book is signed, generally open from seven to five. The conventional direction is clockwise from temple 1, Ryozen-ji in Naruto. Going the other way is called gyaku-uchi and is considered harder. Temples 1 to 23 are in Tokushima and are called the dojo of awakening; that first prefecture is the natural first goal. Accommodation is a mix of temple lodgings, small inns and free shelters. Not every stretch has either.

Respect and access

Temples are working places of worship, not stations to be collected. The usual order at each is to bow at the gate, wash, light incense and a candle, recite or stand quietly, then ask for the stamp. Do not photograph inside main halls unless it is allowed. Do not sound the bell on the way out. If someone offers settai, accept it and give a name slip in return rather than money.

Opening times, prices, permits and eligibility change. Nothing on this page is a statement about today. Follow the Check access link on a place before you plan around it.
