Lumbini is in the flat Terai plain of southern Nepal, a few kilometres from the Indian border. Tradition says Queen Maya stopped here on a journey and gave birth in a grove. The claim is unusually well evidenced for something this old. Ashoka came in 249 BCE and put up a pillar whose inscription says that the Buddha was born here, and that he therefore reduced the village's taxes. Inside the Maya Devi Temple a stone marks the spot, over excavated foundations of shrines going back to the third century BCE.

Lumbini was lost for centuries and identified again only in 1896 when the pillar was found. Since the 1970s the site has been developed to a master plan by Kenzo Tange, with a monastic zone where many countries have built. The result is quiet and large and does not feel like the rest of the Terai.

October to March is the season. The Terai is very hot from April and floods in the monsoon. Entry is from Nepal, by air to Gautam Buddha airport at Bhairahawa or overland from Sonauli, which needs a Nepal visa. The sacred garden is walkable but the monastic zone is spread over several kilometres and most people use a rickshaw or a bicycle.

   Lumbini is where tradition places the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. The Maya Devi Temple stands over a marker stone and the ruins of earlier shrines, next to the Ashokan pillar of 249 BCE that names the spot. The sacred garden around it holds the Puskarini pond and monasteries built by many countries.

Footwear comes off before the Maya Devi Temple and photography inside is restricted. People meditate under the Bodhi tree by the pond for long periods. Keep quiet near them. The Lumbini Development Trust manages the site and its rules are posted at the entrance.
